another read-aloud
July 1, 2009
Our latest breakfast book took longer than normal to read. Our mornings were a little hectic that last week of school so we didn’t do much reading out loud. Then we were on vacation and I didn’t bring it along. But we finally finished it a few days ago. It was The Rescuers by Margery Sharp.
Let me start by saying, this book has next to nothing in common with the Disney movie of the same name. Two of the main characters, mice named Bianca and Bernard, are about the only consistencies. The story line is of mice whose purpose in life is to help rescue prisoners who should not be imprisoned. In this case it’s some Norwegian poet in a dismal place called the black castle. They find a mouse named Nils from Norway to help them out and after lots of waiting around and watching they finally escape in the last 3 chapters.
There were parts of this story that were very exciting for the group but honestly much of it dragged. And it wasn’t fun to read out loud either. It was very dark and somewhat gloomy. So what did the group say?
J (4yo): What’s a badder grade than A because I didn’t like this one so much.
E (8yo): I think this one gets a B- because it was really boring in parts.
K(10yo): still not listening, sigh…
Next up: Mrs Piggle-Wiggle! A much lighter and more fun read – I think even K is finding herself drawn into the silliness.
