Sunday afternoon we spent a few hours at a very fun bowling alley in downtown Chicago. This place isn’t your typical bowling alley – it isn’t smoky, the food is great, there are comfy chairs and couches and lots of room for the kids to run around. It is a great place to spend a rainy, cold day.
We were there with four other families – that made a total of 10 adults and 15 kids. And here’s the thing I can’t stop thinking about, everyone just got along so well. Kids ranging in age from 13 to 4 and yet there was no fighting or unacceptable behavior or tantrums. We didn’t divide up by family groups, instead the kids had their lanes and did their own thing while the adults had our lanes & fun. There were a few moments where I just stood back and looked around. Everyone was joking and laughing and smiling and – here’s the best part – every time I looked it was a different match up of people doing the joking and laughing and smiling together.
It’s hard to find another family where the ages mesh well and everyone gets along. And yet somehow we’ve been lucky enough to become part of a group of six families like this. Six! My scorecard yesterday was miserably bad but I feel like I bowled a perfect game. It just doesn’t get better than being surrounded by the best of family friends. I really think it’s one of the best gifts we can give our children… and ourselves.
