summer observations

These are the things I see when I have a house filled with children in the summer:

– pencils make excellent magic wands

– squirt gun fights are fun but spraying each other with the hose is better (and remembering to turn off said hose before your mother finds a puddle in the yard is even better yet)

– bike rides to the library are an adventure

– lego direction books gather dust while boys spend hours building robots or spaceships purely from imagination

– a few skeins of embroidery thread can create hours of entertainment for 12yo girls who like to make friendship bracelets

– Lake Michigan has magical powers – everyone gets along at the beach

– games of tag in the dark are only called on account of extreme mosquitos

In between the name calling and whining of boredom, I observe a summer filled with precious, fleeting moments.
