One of the problems with working from home and being my own boss is that I never leave my work behind. Every time I walk past my desk I remember that project I should edit or that website I should update or those emails I should send. Some days I’m good about ignoring the call of my desk if it’s after normal hours. Many days I’m not.
Last night – Sunday night – a night after a very full weekend – I should have tucked in the kids and relaxed for an hour before going to bed. Instead, I realized that since my husband wasn’t home I could get some work done. I worked until 10:15pm. Didn’t get as much done as I was hoping, but certainly put a dent in a big project. Then I walked into my room, ready for a little bit of reading time, some down time so I could finally relax.
Instead, I was greeted by two loads of laundry that needed folding. By the time I got that folded, put away and then got myself ready for bed it was 10:45. And unfortunately I was still wired from sitting in front of the computer so late. I was exhausted from a long weekend and yet I couldn’t fall asleep.
And now it’s Monday and I’m staring at a calendar full of practices, ortho appointments, spell bowl performances, dentist appointments, late night commitments… I want a day off. A day to clean my house. A day to curl up on the couch and read for a while, maybe sneak in a nap. A day of quiet.
Where’s the HR department around here? I need to fill out some paperwork and use a personal day.
