the way it’s supposed to be

I watched a Little League game last night and the catcher on one team told the kid on the other that he made a nice cut. He said it quietly – he wasn’t trying to make a big deal out of it – he just wanted to tell the other kid that he did a nice job. It didn’t matter that they were on opposing teams. All that mattered in that moment was two kids having fun.

That’s the way it’s supposed to be.

I went on a run this week that wandered on new trails. I was with a friend and we chatted about this, that and the other. I never noticed my pace but I did notice the way the sun shone through the leaves. We were out there just to exercise our bodies and enjoy our surroundings and company.

That’s the way it’s supposed to be.

My daughter is in basketball camp this week with one of her best friends. After camp yesterday, they got in the car laughing about one of the drills but even as my child was mentioning that she really needs to work on her ball handling, her friend was telling her that she was doing well. And in the next breath, my daughter was pointing out something that her friend did exceptionally well. They were boosting each other up.

That’s the way it’s supposed to be.

Life needs to be less about competing and comparing. It needs to be more about uplifting and enjoying.
