More than just a haircut

My 11yo daughter has been growing her hair long for about 18 months. At first she grew it long because she was looking to do something different. It wasn’t too much later, however, that she decided to grow her hair long for another reason. She wanted to donate her hair to Locks of Love.

For those of you who don’t know, Locks of Love is an organization that creates wigs for financially disadvantaged children who have lost their hair due to a medical diagnosis.

Time went on. Her hair grew longer. Sometime last fall she asked me to measure her ponytail (you have to have at least 10 inches of hair to make a donation). She was getting tired of having long hair, but it wasn’t long enough to donate. In December we measured again. It was close but still too short. She was getting really tired of the long hair. In January we measured again. Even closer but we decided to give it a few more weeks of growing.

Yesterday, it was long enough.

She was giddy with excitement. I can only imagine that somewhere a child will be just as excited to receive a new wig from her donation. I’m so proud of her for thinking outside herself through this.

  1. What a selfless decision. She looks great with short hair, too! Back when I had short hair, I wore a lot of sparkly clips in it… I need to dig around and see if I still have any to pass on to her, since I know we both share a love of all things bright and sparkly.
